I'm Really Looking Forward to Being the Monarch

This week's post is on I Just Can't Wait to be King. You can find the lyrics here. According to one of my best friends, Zazu is my spirit animal. I can't say I disagree.

The gist of this song is Simba is looking forward to the freedom and popularity of kingship without the responsibility. Zazu is trying to be the voice of reason, but it doesn't work well. The biggest reason behind this is just the way children see the future. All they know is their own world--their experiences, desires, and the rules that are keeping them from those desires. They see adults as having no rules, so they're looking forward to being able to do whatever they want.

Of course the problem with this is they don't know anything about taxes, work, keeping the house clean, or how complicated adult relationships can get. When he grows up, he's going to discover how difficult life can be.

Kids aren't the only ones who do this, though. We call it "the grass is always greener." We are always more familiar with our own situation and it's drawbacks than we are with other people's. We tend to only see the positives on the other side of the fence. We think if we can just get over there, it'll all be better. But that's not the way life works. Living in a fallen world, every situation has it's upsides and downsides. Even more importantly, regardless of our situation, freedom to do what we want and adoration from those around us will not give us the ultimate fulfillment we're looking for. That only comes from knowing who God made us to be and doing what He's called us to do, moment by moment.
